A day I wasn’t sure would come is now happening. Matthew Barney and Jonathan Bepler‘s River of Fundament will have a single screening next month, November 14, at the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York in New York City. The event is presented by the New People’s Cinema Club and Unsound New York.
The event includes a public conversation the following day between Matthew Barney and Jonathan Bepler, moderated by Andy Battaglia. I should note that Mr. Battaglia, who is the executive editor of ARTnews and Art in America, is an excellent choice of moderator. He wrote a valuable review of River of Fundament published in The Paris Review in 2014. (As I noted here and elsewhere, many reviews were ill-informed, more than one of which I requested corrections to. Not in this case.)
As I noted here, seeing the 2016 screening of River of Fundament at MOCA Cleveland (after having seeing the exhibition at Munich’s Haus der Kunst in 2014) was a highlight of the decade.
I’ll be there. I can’t wait!
