The retrospectives have included various forms: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austinchronicle.com\/music\/2002-07-19\/97595\/\" target=\"_blank\">:rarum<\/a> series (<a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteager.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/07\/mth-v-keith-jarrett-trio-live-in-antibes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Keith Jarrett<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteager.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/26\/new-listen-jan-garbareks-dresden\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jan Garbarek<\/a>), box sets (e.g., <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteager.com\/blog\/2013\/04\/28\/mth-v-jdj-special-editions-third-world-anthem\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jack DeJohnette<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteager.com\/blog\/2015\/09\/08\/pat-methenys-hommage-a-eberhard-weber-live-at-detroit-jazz-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eberhard Weber<\/a>), or non-:rarum compilations (e.g., <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteager.com\/blog\/tag\/manu-katche\/\" target=\"_blank\">Manu Katch\u00e9<\/a>, Anouar Brahem). Katch\u00e9&#8217;s addition &#8212; along with Brahem&#8217;s &#8212; to that lineup helps to usher in a younger generation.<\/p>\n<p>It shouldn&#8217;t surprise longtime readers of this blog that I&#8217;m a fan of Manu Katch\u00e9. 2010&#8217;s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteager.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/19\/new-listen-manu-katches-third-round\/\" target=\"_blank\">Third Round<\/a><\/em> not only led to my writing this site&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteager.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/19\/new-listen-manu-katches-third-round\/\" target=\"_blank\">first album review<\/a>, but it also quickly led me into the Katch\u00e9 catalogue. It was also through <em>Third Round<\/em> that I came to know the playing and library of <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteager.com\/blog\/tag\/tore-brunborg\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tore Brunborg<\/a>, who I now consider one of my favorite living saxophonists.<\/p>\n<p><em>Touchstone for Manu<\/em> draws pretty equally from Katch\u00e9&#8217;s four albums as a leader on ECM: 2005&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Neighbourhood-Marcin-Wasilewski\/dp\/B000A32KJQ\" target=\"_blank\">Neighbourhood<\/a><\/em>, 2007&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Playground-Manu-Katch\/dp\/B000TLPW30\" target=\"_blank\">Playground<\/a><\/em>, 2010&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Third-Round-Manu-Katche\/dp\/B003616M3O\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Third Round<\/em><\/a>, and 2012&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B008U0FJF8\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Manu Katch\u00e9<\/em><\/a>. (1992&#8217;s\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Its-About-Time-Manu-Katche\/dp\/B0000071AW\" target=\"_blank\">It&#8217;s About Time<\/a><\/em> [on BMG] and 2014&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actmusic.com\/en\/Artists\/Manu-Katche\/Live-in-concert\/Live-in-concert-CD\" target=\"_blank\">Live in Concert<\/a><\/em> [on ACT] aren&#8217;t included.) Chronologically, these albums go from an acoustic aesthetic rooted in more straight-ahead jazz to involving some electric and electronic elements as well as more pop grooves and\/or devices. You can certainly hear this in the compilation&#8217;s selections. And this should be no surprise, as Katch\u00e9 has one foot each firmly planted in jazz and pop. Aside from the aforementioned Jan Garbarek, he&#8217;s also extensively played behind the likes of Peter Gabriel, Sting, and <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteager.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/10\/mth-v-joni-mitchell-live\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joni Mitchell<\/a>. His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0dxsbYMk6o8\" target=\"_blank\">upcoming studio debut on ACT<\/a> looks to get funky with a full horn section, which I can&#8217;t wait to hear.<\/p>\n<p>As a composer, one thing I appreciate most about Katch\u00e9 work is the way he structures a piece. It&#8217;s a constant throughout his oeuvre. Instead of heavily relying on the typical head-solo-head[-outro] format that permeates so many jazz albums, Katch\u00e9 often includes segues, countermelodies, and other devices to maintain interest. (Of course, he&#8217;ll sometimes use the head-solo-head format as well, but it&#8217;s great that it&#8217;s not a crutch for him.) Sometimes it&#8217;s not clear if the lead line is improvising or playing a defined part &#8212; if it&#8217;s the melody or a solo.<\/p>\n<p>Briefly, the lineup for each album (as represented on <em>Touchstone<\/em>, as some personnel don&#8217;t make it) is:<br \/>\n\u2022 <em>Neighbourhood<\/em> includes the rhythm section of Katch\u00e9 (drums, percussion), Marcin Wasilewski (piano), and S\u0142awomir Kurkiewicz (double bass) with the frontline of elder heavies Jan Garbarek (sax) and Tomasz Sta\u0144ko (trumpet).<br \/>\n\u2022 <em>Playground<\/em> keeps the same rhythm section but features a younger frontline of <a href=\"http:\/\/michaelteager.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/18\/video-manu-katche-live\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mathias Eick <\/a>(trumpet) and Trygve Seim (sax). Another acoustic quintet.<br \/>\n\u2022 <em>Third Round<\/em> has the rhythm section of Katch\u00e9, Pino Palladino (electric bass), Jason Rebello (piano), and Jacob Young (guitar), with Tore Brunborg (sax) as the solo horn.<br \/>\n\u2022 <em>Manu Katch<\/em>\u00e9 is a pared-down quartet of Katch\u00e9, Jim Watson (piano, Hammond B-3), Brunborg (sax), and Nils Petter Molv\u00e6r (trumpet &amp; effects).<\/p>\n<p><em>Touchstone<\/em> includes some nice variety. The first half features the acoustic bands with the electric ones in the latter half, allowing the listener to hear the stylistic evolution over his first decade as a leader on ECM. Another thing worth noting is that, for a drummer to be leading an instrumental band, it&#8217;s remarkable how restrained Katch\u00e9&#8217;s playing is in the studio. While there are some active and\/or funky tunes (e.g., &#8220;So Groovy,&#8221; &#8220;Keep on Tripping,&#8221; &#8220;Running After Years&#8221;), the drums never really let loose. Katch\u00e9&#8217;s happy to lay down a groove and to let the band play with and off each other as opposed to bathe in the spotlight. Over the course of the album&#8217;s eleven tracks, you hear Katch\u00e9&#8217;s sound (through his band and compositions) really come into its own. From the straight-ahead numbers (&#8220;Take Offs and Land,&#8221; &#8220;Song For Her&#8221;) to the more pop-oriented (&#8220;Swing Piece&#8221;) and a synthesis of both (&#8220;Running After Years,&#8221; &#8220;Slowing the Tides&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p><em>Touchstone for Manu<\/em> is a great place to start for the uninitiated. With an even mix of albums and styles, it&#8217;s a nice primer and reference point for his output as a leader on ECM. The lineup is largely a transition band between <em>Playground <\/em>and <em>Third Round, <\/em>featuring some personnel from both albums.
